I was born in South Carolina where I have lived most of my life. I grew up in a small community in the northern part of the state. There were no art classes until I went to college but I always loved “making things” and that it true today. I worked as a sculptor for many years but in the 1990’s I took a position in a textile company as a designer and it was during that time that I became interested in quilt making. I began to explore the materials and techniques of quilt making so that I could make a personal and unique statement. I think of my work as Textile Constructions, and I work at my art full time. I view this work as a record of my studio experience, my inner life, my imagination and my dreams. The works are abstract compositions that invite interpretation. The work can originate as a response to a color, a song, something I’ve read, a thumbnail sketch or any combination of things I experience in daily living. The work is constructed by machine-piecing and I use fabric that I hand dye. The work is then intensely machine quilted. You are invited to read my blog as I proceed with my weekly Textile Constructions project. |
